If you are trying to find some pieces to fit into your wardrobe or part of your collection, you should be at least versed with the leather terminology and how to determine leather value.

Vintage leather purses termed mint condition means that these pieces are almost like new. Although they may be several years old already, these purses were probably never used at all and remains exactly how it looked like when it first became available. Excellent condition means that the vintage leather purses may be showing some sign of wear due to age, but there probably are no major problems in designs or function. Near excellent condition or the term “gently used” simply means that the leather may be seen with minimal wear. The design and function still remains at top caliber despite being slightly used. Finally, very good condition or the term “used” means that the purse was probably used by a former owner on a regular basis and the leather shows more noticeable wear. However, these pieces still remain in pretty good shape.

Vintage leather purses are also classified according to the quality and make of the leather itself. Patent leather pieces should be sleek, glossy and free from cracks or breakage. Their colors should be shiny as well. Unusual colorations or combination of colors also play a critical role in naming the price of such pieces. Hand tooled leather and woven leather pieces are also valued for their intricate designs. Usually, these pieces are very rare and expensive. The maker of the piece or the name of the designing house is another element that dictates value.

Fashion Versus Collection

First distinguish whether you want the hat for wearing purposes or for collecting purposes. In other words, are you going to wear the piece or store it for display purposes only? If you are indeed looking at men’s vintage hats so that you could wear them on a semi-regular basis, try to choose ones that seem to be still of great quality. Colors must be bright. Bands and crowns must be intact. How would you know that these are quality material? Simple, run your hands through them. And if possible, wear them to see if they fit. Dry cleaning is also a must since previously worn hats do tend to collect sweat on the inner rims and dust on the outside.

If you are collecting vintage hats, it is important to assess whether the hat has been previously worn or not. Unless the hats had earlier belonged to a known personality, most unworn hats are more expensive than those that have been previously used. Hats from the 1940s and later on are easier to assess, since many of these are still being made by modern day hatters. However, any head gear prior to the 1940s may be more difficult to asses. Quality is always an issue, so check for tears, breaks and stains on the materials before buying.

Vintage Elgin watches have been in production since 1897. The most incredible part is that many of them are still working in the present times. Collectors of vintage Elgin watches and other cheap vintage clothes can have most of their 100 or 150 year old watches easily repaired to great working conditions by simply going to a professional restorer of antique watches. The reason for this is that the company had developed a system wherein watches could be easily fixed and parts could easily be replaced using factory produced Elgin materials. In fact, the company had flooded the market with too many spare parts that a lot of them still exist these days. Prior to this, all watches had to be hand-made, including the parts that needed replacements.

Technically, only Elgin watches that are 100 years old or older are considered truly “antique.” However, some people simply assume that all Elgin watches are now historic, even those that are made – or rather, assembled from the vast collection of Elgin watch spare parts. These modern assembled watches have, however, the least value when it comes to the rates of vintage Elgin watches.

The age, of course, is the greatest indicator of value for collecting Elgin watches. The oldest watches have less probability of finding matches similar to it; and even less probability that the original spare parts are still available. Hence, the oldest pieces have the highest monetary value. The state of preservation is also important. Aside from keeping the watch exteriors scratch-free and unblemished, the priceless pieces are those that still run with about 75% to 99% of its original parts.

The exquisite and intricate workmanship of vintage pearl jewelry are what sets this bodily ornament several bars above everything else. Pearl jewelry used to stand out in ancient times particularly because this gemstone was not that easy to harvest, and most certainly not that easy to match. In order for one jeweler to create a bracelet of same colored, same hued, same shaped, and same sized pearls, months and years of searching may be due. Back then, all pearls were naturally occurring, and the techniques and methods for culturing pearls were still in its infancy. This made pearl jewelry very, very expensive during that age, not cheap vintage clothes.

Also, perfectly round pearls were quite rare in natural settings. These are the ones most highly valued for its perfect symmetry and luminescence. Akoya pearls (teardrop shaped) and baroque pearls (spherical shaped) were more common – but not so common that the man on the street could afford to buy one on a whim. Matching pearl jewelry pieces were so rare that during its heyday, only royalty could afford to wear them. However, some jewelers developed techniques to accentuate one or more pearls into silver and gold settings. Here, the intricate workmanship that many jewelers had developed helped turn singular or non-matching pearl pieces into exquisite pieces of art.

In the modern era, vintage pearl jewelry is even pricier than ever before. The pearls usually darken in color a bit but retain its luminescent glow. Although there are now new “vintage” pearl jewelries (at more affordable prices), these newer creations still cannot compare to the vintage pieces when it comes to the value of the natural pearls, or the exquisite design, or the intricate workmanship of the jewels.

3. Choose the ones that stand out. There are shoes, and there are shoes, and then there are shoes. Most people cannot tell vintage shoes from conventional shoes anyway. So, if you really want people to notice, try to choose the vintage pieces that have the most unique designs. Distinctive color and unusual materials also help garner people’s attention.
